“Argus” and “Igor”, the Howler monkeys
These two Howler monkeys have been at Pilpintuwasi for about a year only. Igor’s mother was killed for food by a fisherman. When the man returned to his town he asked in Pilpintuwasi if they would receive a little howler.
Igor is a very nice and calm monkey, who’s always hungry. He has been taking care of the little black Capuchin monkey when he was new at Pilpintuwasi, but lately he stays mostly with his own kin “Argus”.
“Argus” had been kept in the village by an older hunter for about two weeks after he had killed the babies’ mother. One afternoon going through the village Robler noticed a man running with a broomstick after, what he thought was a little dog, trying to hit it. When Robler came closer he saw that the man tried to hit a baby Howler monkey. He asked the man what he was doing, and the guy said he was going to kill that monkey because he had bitten him. So Robler offered to take the monkey with him, but he wanted to know what had happened. He was told that the little animal had tried to steal food from the man, although he had been fed with Inca Cola (that’s a Peruvian soft drink that tastes likes chewing gum)…..
“Argus” is doing very well at Pilpintuwasi, but although he had almost the same size as “Igor” when he arrived, he isn’t developing as fast. It seems that as he didn’t have any good food when he was so young he won’t recover completely and maybe never grow as big as Igor. He is very attached to Gudrun, and she doesnt give him his milk immediately when he wants it, he just sits on her neck, his tail around her throat and whines.
Both “Igor” and “Argus” have started to howl already – but only when it rains very hard or there is a loud thunder. They are less playful than the other monkeys – maybe that’s due to their almost 100% leaf diet. But they also get their crazy moments and then they play with all the other monkeys – hanging only from the tip of their impressive tail and pulling other monkeys up into the air, swinging from a branch.
Help us repairing a little bit of the damage humans have done to these animals.
